Individual Therapy for Adults

Individual Therapy for Substance Use

A judgment-free place to look honestly at your relationship with alcohol or drugs, whether you want to stop, cut back, stay in recovery, or you’re still figuring out what you want.

You don’t have to hit rock bottom to decide something needs to change.

Maybe you’ve started wondering whether you’re drinking or using more than you want to. Maybe you’ve tried to cut back and keep finding yourself in the same pattern. Or maybe you’ve already made significant changes and want support building a life that makes those changes easier to maintain.

You don’t have to have everything figured out before coming to therapy. We can start with where you are, without judgment, lectures, or requiring you to put a label on yourself.

Substance use often makes sense when we understand what it’s doing for someone. It may provide relief from anxiety, numb difficult emotions, make social situations easier, quiet an overactive mind, or simply become a deeply learned habit. Understanding the function doesn’t mean ignoring the consequences. It gives us somewhere useful to start.

What We Can Work On

Sound familiar?

✓Wondering whether alcohol or drug use has become a problem
✓Trying to cut back but slipping into the same patterns
✓Using substances to cope with stress, anxiety, loneliness, or difficult emotions
✓Feeling caught between wanting to change and not being sure you’re ready
✓Recognizing triggers but struggling to respond differently
✓Trying to rebuild trust or relationships affected by substance use
✓Shame, guilt, or self-criticism about things that happened while using
✓Adjusting to life without substances after treatment or early recovery
✓Worry about relapse or returning to old patterns
✓Wanting a healthier relationship with yourself while making meaningful changes

Understanding the pattern isn’t the same as excusing it.

Substance use isn’t a moral failure. Genetics, learning, environment, stress, trauma, mental health, relationships, and the way our brains respond to reward can all play a role.

Understanding those influences can reduce shame, but it doesn’t take away your ability or responsibility to decide what happens next. Therapy gives us room for both: self-compassion and accountability.

We may work on identifying triggers, understanding what substances have been doing for you, learning other ways to manage difficult emotions, tolerating urges without automatically acting on them, rebuilding relationships, developing relapse-prevention strategies, and creating routines and connections that support the life you want.

We can also explore how anxiety, ADHD, relationship issues, grief, stress, or other concerns may interact with substance use rather than treating each issue as though it exists in isolation.

My approach incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and practical relapse-prevention strategies when appropriate. The goal isn’t shame or perfection. It’s helping you make increasingly intentional choices about what you want your life to look like.

You don’t have to know your goal before you walk in.

Some people come to therapy knowing they want to stop using completely. Others want to cut back, understand their patterns, or simply figure out whether their substance use is becoming a problem.

We can talk honestly about what’s happening, what you’re concerned about, and what you want to be different. You don’t have to arrive with the answer.
